Westfield White Takes a Walk on the Win Side

On Thursday, June 16th, Westfield White traveled to the Long Hill Little League complex to face off against the Watchung Hills Warriors. The Westfield faithful were treated to a darkness-shortened six inning 14-3 victory in the 2011 season opener. The White offense was led by Steve Barmakian (3 for 3, BB, 4 RBI’s) Cam Bremmer, ( 1 for 4, 3 RBI’s) and Rowan Oberman (3 for 4, 1 RBI). Westfield jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on timely hitting and efficient base running. In the second inning, Westfield, playing “small ball,” scored a run without the benefit of a hit. Vin DiFilippo led off the inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Eric Varakian and scored on Devin Anderson’s grounder to short.

Southpaw Rowan Oberman held the Warriors in check over the first three innings by allowing only one run on two hits while striking out five. DiFilippo replaced Oberman in the 4th and kept the Warriors bats at bay by allowing only two runs on four hits. DiFilippo was aided by an outstanding defensive play by center fielder Chris Rinaldi. With a runner on first, Rinaldi quickly fielded a bloop single hit to right center and fired a strike to shortstop Barmakian covering second to catch the lead runner.
Westfield broke the game open in the 4th scoring 8 runs on only two hits. Westfield hitters patiently worked the count and were rewarded with six walks. In the sixth, Bremmer closed out the scoring with a bases-loaded double blasted to the base of the fence in left center.
Westfield next faces the Summit Hill-toppers in the home opener on Friday June 17th at Tamaques Field #2.
