Confessions of a Baseball Blogger
By Renee
And so it begins. The emails from Coach Rinaldi have started to trickle down. No need now to worry about those darn patches on the sleeve at this point.
We’ve tried every folding beach chair in our collection and deemed them all uncomfortable; and we’ve compared bug sprays with no definitive conclusions except that those fan things are just kind of cool.
We’ve eaten a lot of fast food; gotten to know names of the ice cream truck drivers and underwritten the concession stand at Warren for the next year. We can tell a rookie the best place to park in South Plainfield to avoid a foul ball collision, and how to traverse the creek to get to the Mountainside fields.

Westfield Knocks Out Edison in States Play
Written by Renee Trabert
Westfield bounced back from a heat-drenched morning in Newark to score a decisive 9-0victory in the States over Edison.
White jumped out to an early lead tacking on three runs in the first inning, and then quickly shut down the Edison behind the pitching of DiFilippo who struck out two in three innings of work, and forced Edison to pop up repeatedly to the waiting gloves of Mele in center and Oberman at first. Varakian made a sliding catch in right field to keep Edison scoreless through three.
Mele got things rolling in the third with a hard hit double, and eluded a run down later in the inning to score. Heinbokel came in to score off a Rinaldi sac fly deep to the outfield, and Westfield led 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Oberman assumed pitching duty and Rinaldi, Mele and Bremer backed him up by pulling down popups through two innings. Westfield broke the game open in the sixth after Anderson and Boutsikaris walked, and Oberman laid down a perfect bunt, scoring Anderson. Barmakian crushed a two-run double and got a lift home thanks to a RBI single by Bremer, who went 3-4 on the night.
Leading 9-0, Oberman came out and quickly struck out the first Edison batter. Varano and Boutsikaris provided the final two outs. Mele came in to close the game and forced three out of the four Edison batters he faced to ground out.

Westfield White continued its hot streak Wednesday night with a victory against South Orange.
The ninth game action began with a left center double by Rinaldi. Following a walk by Barmakian, Rinaldi scored on a Bremer sack fly to center field, giving Westfield one run at the end of its first at-bat. With Barmakian at the mound, our defense then stepped into action. The Heinbokel-Rinaldi dynamic defensive duo thwarted a steal attempt at second and, although South Orange later managed to load the bases, Varakian at second base fielded a grounder and made the last out at first. 1-0 at the end of the first.
