White Walks Away With a Win over Summit

Written by Whitney Bremer

Westfield White left Summit’s beautifully manicured diamond with another check in the “win” column on Wednesday night.

With Varano on the mound in the first inning, the Westfield defense was solid but the bats were silent. The second inning was also scoreless for Westfield, although its impressive defense was highlighted with a Rinaldi-Oberman-Varakian double play.

At the top of the third, Varakian started the Hit Parade with a line drive to center field. Westfield finally put a run on the scoreboard when Heinbokel scored on a passed ball. As the inning progressed, Westfield scored a total of six runs, and the crowd was treated to a great shot to left center by Varano. In the bottom of the third, with Varano still on the mound, it was 3-up, 3-down for Summit.

Westfield picked up another three runs in the fourth inning, while Summit ‘s offense was shut down, thanks to Varano on the mound and plays like the running catch by Barmakian at third.

Westfield’s offense, which resulted in another four runs in the fifth inning, was punctuated by a Mele shot down the first base line.

Mele then took over the mound, limiting Summit to three additional runs in the final two innings.

Although at the end of the first inning the score had been 1-0 for Summit, Westfield climbed out of the hole and then just kept on climbing, ending with a 13-4 victory.
