Tonight, Westfield White suffered its first loss at Summit by a score of 2-1. The misfortune started with playing a home game rescheduled to a contest away because of the rainout earlier in the season.
Throughout the game, Westfield White struggled in key situations, failing to bring their runners home. The first inning ended on a well-executed double play by Summit leaving one Westfield runner on second. In the third inning, with the bases loaded, an outstanding throw by the Summit shortstop to first afforded the third out, spoiling Westfield’s golden chance to score.
In the fourth, a sacrifice fly by Boutsikaris gave Westfield the only score of the night. The bad fortune would strike again in the 5th inning: with the bases loaded, the same shortstop fielded a hard grounder and throw to first to end the inning. In the 6th inning, two more Westfield runners were left on base. On several occasions, Westfield batters hit the ball hard, but the ball would fly right to the gloves of Summit fielders, typified by the final out of the game at the bottom half of the 7th inning.
Despite the offensive struggle, Westfield pitchers battled hard, handing out only one hard hit single and another bunt single. In the top of 4th inning, a Summit runner charged hard towards home plate with no intention of avoiding the collision.
Westfield catcher Mele secured the baseball in his glove, held to his ground while applying the tag, sending the Summit player to the bench for the rest of the night. In the top of the 7th inning, with Rinaldi on the mound, Barmakian fielded a hard grounder while playing shortstop, stepped on second, and fired a strike to first; the double play thwarted Summit’s final attempt to add to the score.
