In a game highlighted by a trifecta of triples delivered up by a pair of Christophers, Westfield White beat South Orange-Maplewood in a mercy-shortened six-inning game.
Lin returned to the mound taking the ball as the starting pitcher and made quick work of the S.O.M batters, retiring six batters in two innings of work, with the help of strong throws by third baseman Anderson and reliable fielding by Boutsikaris on first.
Westfield bats came out strong at the team’s first at-bat with Barmakian, Bremer, Mele and DiFilippo all knocking in run-scoring hits to give Westfield a four-run lead in the first. White tacked on a run in the second inning when Heinbokel got on board with a single and Varakian provided a RBI sac-fly.
Boutsikaris and Lin switched places in the third inning, and Boutsikaris provided his own defensive support with a deft run to first place to cover a toss from Varakian for the first out. Lin snagged a ball up the first base line for the second out, and Oberman caught a pop up in the outfield to end the inning. Varano drove in a run in the third to put Westfield up 6-0.
In dramatic fashion, Boutsikaris made a Spartan catch off the mound for the first out of the fourth and then got the next two batters to ground out. Mele took the ball for Westfield in the fifth and got help from Varano who caught a popfly and then threw to second for a double-out, inning-ending play. Barmakian laced a hit in the fifth, Bremer singled and Varano plated Bremer with the first of three triples on the night to bring the score to 7-0.
Mele stopped a potential rally by S.O.M in the top of the sixth by delivering a key strikeout with bases loaded. Varakian capped off the inning with a cleanly fielded ground out at second, leaving the S.O.M. runners stranded.
White delivered a final offensive punch in the sixth serving up eight runs, including: a RBI single by Boutsikaris; the second triple, a two-run hit by Rinaldi; a RBI double by Barmakian; a single by Barmakian and Varano’s second triple, a bomb launched into the next field. Mele put the game out of reach with a game-ending RBI single, bringing the score to 15-0.
