Westfield Knocks Out Edison in States Play

Written by Renee Trabert

Westfield bounced back from a heat-drenched morning in Newark to score a decisive 9-0victory in the States over Edison.

White jumped out to an early lead tacking on three runs in the first inning, and then quickly shut down the Edison behind the pitching of DiFilippo who struck out two in three innings of work, and forced Edison to pop up repeatedly to the waiting gloves of Mele in center and Oberman at first. Varakian made a sliding catch in right field to keep Edison scoreless through three.

Mele got things rolling in the third with a hard hit double, and eluded a run down later in the inning to score. Heinbokel came in to score off a Rinaldi sac fly deep to the outfield, and Westfield led 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Oberman assumed pitching duty and Rinaldi, Mele and Bremer backed him up by pulling down popups through two innings. Westfield broke the game open in the sixth after Anderson and Boutsikaris walked, and Oberman laid down a perfect bunt, scoring Anderson. Barmakian crushed a two-run double and got a lift home thanks to a RBI single by Bremer, who went 3-4 on the night.

Leading 9-0, Oberman came out and quickly struck out the first Edison batter. Varano and Boutsikaris provided the final two outs. Mele came in to close the game and forced three out of the four Edison batters he faced to ground out.
