In Westfield White’s second game of the New Jersey States on Sunday, the weather was scorching but Westfield was even hotter, winning a decisive 9-4 victory over Lyndhurst.
Westfield scored its first run at the top of the first, thanks to a Rinaldi RBI double (that’s one!) that brought in Oberman. With DiFilippo on the mound at the bottom of the inning, Lyndhurst battled back to tie the score.
Westfield White came alive in the second inning. A single by DiFilippo started the rally, followed by a ground rule double by Heinbokel. A single by Varakian brought home DiFilippo; a single by Oberman was followed by an RBI double (that’s two!) that brought in Varakian. After a walk by Barmakian loaded the bases, Bremer’s sacrifice fly brought in an additional run (Oberman), and Varano’s single brought in yet another run (Rinaldi), bringing the score to 5-1, where it remained through the bottom of the inning, thanks to a catch in left by Bremer, a snag at short by Rinaldi, and a strikeout by DiFilippo. Lyndhurst brought the score to 5-2 at the bottom of the third inning.
In the fourth, a double by Rinaldi (that’s three!) followed by a Barmakian shot over the center field fence, raised the score to 7-2. At the bottom of the inning, Oberman took the mound, and Westfield held the score to 7-2.
After an uneventful top of the fifth inning, Lyndhurst fought back to score two runs. Lyndhurst was threatening, with one out and the bases loaded, when a shot was hit to DiFilippo at third, who fired it to Heinbokel at the plate, who in turn rifled it to Lin at first, for an inning-ending double play that extinguished Lyndhurst’s hopes for a comeback.
After a 1-2-3 sixth inning with Oberman on the mound, Westfield put two more on the scoreboard in the seventh, thanks to great hitting by Oberman, Rinaldi (bunt), Barmakian and Varano. Lyndhurst’s last licks were cut short by Mele’s grab at center field and two great strikeouts by Closer Rinaldi.
