Westfield Wins Nail-Biter Over Springfield

Westfield White won its 3rd district game Sunday night in a 3-2 nail-biter against Springfield.

Rowan took the mound to start the game and Springfield was able to drive in it's first run on a long drive by their cleanup hitter. Although Westfield responded with two singles by Chris R. and Steven in the bottom of the inning, Westfield was not able to capitalize on the hits. The next 3 innings continued with solid pitching by both teams. Rowan's seven strike outs and strong defense by Chris V, Bouts, Steven, and Liam, highlighted in the 3rd inning when Liam gunned down the runner attempting to steal 3rd, kept Springfield in check. At the end of 4 it was Springfield 1 - Westfield 0.

Matt Russo took the mound and went through the Springfield line-up quickly in the 5th, and then the Westfield bats came alive in the bottom of the inning. Rowan started the rally with a single followed by another single by Steven. Cameron came in and smashed the ball to left scoring two runs and putting Westfield in the lead 2-1. Eric was able to load the bases after Chris V walked and stole a base. Bouts worked a walk to get another run in making it 3-1.

Springfield added another run in the 6th and then the tension started to build. With the sun setting and fire works booming, the setting was created for the drama of the 7th inning. The bases were loaded. Chris Rinaldi was at the helm. One out. Batter up. Two strikes. Full count. Almost a pick off. Then foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, ....hearts racing....a strong hit to right field...Eric makes the first out...throws it to Boutiskaris who drives a bullet to Liam for...the final out at home. Westfield wins a close one!!
