Westfield White Beats Springfield in Home Opener

Written by Linus Lin

Fresh from a nail biter between the two teams the night before in the District Tournament, Westfield White returned home to face Springfield in the league game. The Westfield fans and parents came en masse for the home opener after traveling for the first 6 games on the road.

On the night before, Springfield pitchers bothered Westfield batters throughout the game with tailing fastballs and breaking curveballs. On Monday, Westfield players showed great patience in the box, and hit the ball much better from the very start of the game. At the bottom half of the first inning, Oberman and Rinaldi drew back-to-back walks; a double play thawed the first scoring chance of Westfield but allowed Oberman to advance to third.

Bremer then launched a bomb to deep center, resulting in an RBI double. Varano immediately followed with hard hit single, which inspired a double to right center by DiFillipo and another single by Anderson, scoring three more runners. Westfield jumped to a 4:0 lead after one inning.

Westfield continued its scoring in the second inning. After one out, Oberman drew a walk, advanced to 2nd, and eventfully scored on a throwing error. Rinaldi hit a single, and reached home on a wide pitch. After a scoreless third, Heinbokel reached first on a single in the fourth, so did Oberman by an error. Rinaldi battled for a walk, loading up the bases. Then, back to back singles by Barmakian and Bremer sent all three runners home, thereby expanding Westfield’s lead to 9:0.

In the meantime, Westfield played great defense, and outstanding pitching by Varakian, Varano, and Bremer kept Springfield scoreless until the 6th inning, when Springfield scored the only run of the night. With the final score of 9:1, Westfield players and fans started their first after-game party of the season.
