In a mercy-rule shortened five innings, Westfield White took home the North Jersey All Star League Championship Trophy by beating Summit 15-0.
Westfield relied on its strong pitching, reliable fielding and explosive offensive to jump out early behind strike-dealing pitcher Rinaldi and the bat of Barmakian. After Oberman and Rinaldi got on board with singles, Barmakian crushed a ball to record Westfield’s first two runs on the night.
Westfield kept Summit scoreless and quickly returned to the plate with Rinaldi laying down a perfect bunt and Barmakian, with another bomb to the center field, producing a three-run double and putting Westfield up 5-0.
Rinaldi shut down Summit’s only scoring opportunity of the night by dealing back-to-back strikeouts with bases loaded. A pop up to Mele at short closed the door.
Westfield exploded in the bottom of the fourth starting with a single by Varano, who then came around to score off a RBI single by Heinbokel. Anderson followed up with a double on which Westfield scored two runs with the help of Summit overthrows. Boutsikaris banged in a RBI single, Oberman doubled up and then, Rinaldi rocketed a ball to the left field fenceline for a triple. With six runs plated, Barmakian and Bremer worked walks setting up Mele to score both runners off a hard-hit single and a Summit error. Westfield led 11-0 at the end of four.
Rinaldi made quick work of Summit in the top of the fifth striking out one player, and forcing two pop outs, fielded by DiFilippo at third and Lin in right field.
Heinbokel earned a lead-off walk and got to third on an Anderson double. Varakian brought in Heinbokel for the 14th run, while Boutsikaris pounded out a single bringing home the last and final runner of the night. With a 15-run lead, the game was called at the end of the fifth.
At the end of the game, the players and coaches received a long round of appreciative applause from friends and family. The team was awarded large trophies and provided the ceremonial sprinkling of the bubbly from an enthusiastic crowd of sibling supporters, while Coaches got the traditional ice water/gatorade shower! Life is Good!
